Microsoft cuts back on Windows activation keys due to abuse
Microsoft cuts back the number of Windows activation keys it issues to unlock software, because the company claims sellers illegally exploit the keys. These product keys, also known as software keys, are issued to activate and use software. These keys certify that the software is original and copyright protected.
Microsoft states unauthorized traders copy the product keys of Microsoft TechNet Subscriptions, the Microsoft Partner Network (MPN), Microsoft Developer Network (MSDN), Software Assurance (SA) and Open Licensing programs.
Also, Microsoft claims so-called pirates profit from the promotional giveaways at events that all offer discounted or free products in exchange for activation codes. The illegal sellers use these discounted or free products and re-sell them for a higher price. As a result, Microsoft and its partners generate less revenue and users end up with improperly licensed and unsupported products.
Due to this situation, administrators and developers who pay to get access to Microsoft products will receive fewer keys in order to activate and use the software. Now, Microsoft will only issue 3 activation keys per product instead of 5 keys.
