Newest software makes creating ebooks at home easy

Creating ebooks on your own computer seems to be an upcoming hit. The past days, several companies have launched new ebook software. Two examples are Inkling Habitat and Booktype. Inkling Habitat may be seen as a competitor of Apple's iBooks, which software also enables creating interactive digital books.

Inkling Habitat is a cloud-based platform where professional publishers can make interactive digital books. With Inkling Habitat, users can add HD video's, interactive functions and 3D models to their ebook. Furthermore, the software makes it easy to cooperate on the creation of ebook with for example a publisher, a designer or an editor. Because a project made with Inkling Habitat is stored on a cloud based account, it is easy to make changes to the project at any given time. After finalisation, the ebook can be published directly from the Inkling Habitat environment to the iPad and the internet (in HTML5).

Booktype, created by Sourcefabrik, provides publishers an open source platform where authors can work together on an ebook. Also, Booktype makes it possible for authors to discuss about the content. As Booktype is an open source platform, everyone may use it on their private webserver or on public websites. With Booktype software, both ebooks and printed books can be edited.

Both software’s create a multiplatform for the creation of ebooks. Software for creating ebooks seems to be a fast developing technology, and competitors pay close attention to each other. This fast development might mean do-it-yourself ebook production will become quite mainstream. We’ll have to see how this will affect the ebook market and, more interestingly, where this will leave traditional publishing. Can novelists reinvent themselves through this technology? An interesting question.
