Singapore Press Holdings sues Yahoo! over copyright infringement
Yesterday, Singapore Press Holdings (SPH), Singapore’s largest newspaper publisher, announced it filed a copyright infringement lawsuit against search engine Yahoo! Inc.
SPH claims Yahoo! reproduced news from its newspapers without permission of SPH. As the headquarters of Yahoo!'s operations in Southeast Asia is settled in Singapore, it’s not suprising that SPH - publisher of almost all newspapers in Singapore - is key stakeholder with respect to the copyright claims.
Chin Soo Fan, SPH spokeswoman, said Yahoo! reproduced 23 articles from their newspapers this year without SPH’s license or authorization.
Last Friday, SPH filed the writ of summons and statement of claim to the Singapore High Court. These documents were served to Yahoo! Southeast Asia on Monday. Yahoo! officials were not immediately available for comment.
