After BT other British ISPs also urged to block Newzbin2
Representatives of the film industry have sent a letter to broadband Internet Service Providers (ISPs) TalkTalk, Virgin Media UK and Sky Broadband, in which they request to block access to the Usenet index site Newzbin2. According to ISPReview, the letter is said to reveal the film industry’s plans to seek a court order against the providers and asks whether or not the ISPs would contest this.
The request does not really come as a surprise. Recently, BT (British Telecom) was also ordered to block Newzbin2, after Hollywood film companies won a high court test case. A noteworthy detail was that BT was not only urged to block the site, but also had to bear the costs of the filtering system called Cleanfeed.
So far, all ISPs involved have said that they would require a court order before any block could be imposed, although the ISPs appear to have the technological ability to do so. Now we will have to wait and see whether how ISP’ will respond to the film studio’s request or whether there will be a court order.
