EDPS expresses concerns regarding the European piracy database

The European Data Protection Supervisor (EDPS) wants the European Commission to clarify the terms of a European database with data of people who infringed copyrights. According to the EDPS, it's unclear which services have access to the database, how the database is protected, which services manage the data and how long the data is stored.

The European Commission plans to launch a European database containing all data collected from people who infringed copyrights. Through the database, copyright authorities of Member States can start a focused research on copyright infringements such as piracy. According to the EDPS, some important aspects regarding the database are not yet clearly defined. According to EDPS, it's important that the European Commission amends the database so it does not breach European legislation regarding the processing of personal data.

The European database is the result of stricter enforcement on intellectual property rights and derives from the European strategic paper on intellectual property in the market, that was published by the European Commission in the spring of this year.

The strategic document is available here.
