First iPad newspaper unsuccessful

The Daily, the first app that brings daily news and is specially developed for the iPad, appears to be a lot less profitable as expected. The first iPad app, designed by Apple and News Corporation, only has 120.000 readers per week.

An iPad advertising executive announced the disappointing number of newspaper readers. Included in the number of readers are both paying and non-paying readers. It’s unclear how many paying readers the iPad newspaper has. The non-paying readers make use of a free two-week newspaper trial.

In February, Rupert Murdoch, CEO of News Corporation, reported that The Daily app needs around 500,000 subscribers to be profitable. Earlier Apple and News Corporation claimed apps are the medium of the future when it comes to distribution of newspapers, but their own newspaper app isn’t that successful.

Despite the difficult period, Murdoch still has faith in the newspaper app. Soon a more limited version of the The Daily will be launched on Facebook and an Android version for other tablets released.
