ICM Registry opened registration of top level domain .xxx

Yesterday, the American ICM Registry announced that companies can register their websites with the domain name extension .xxx. Next to the extensions such as .com, .gov and .nl, the extension .xxx now exists. It is especially meant for erotic websites.

This extension has caused some uproar. Trademark holders fear for damages to their (well-known) trademark. It is possible to profit from a well-known name/trademark as all the names and trademarks are possible to use for a pornografic website with the .xxx extension. This may harm the name and reputation of companies that want nothing to do with adult content.

Also, the porn industry itself is worried. The porn industry fears that governments might want to block their porn websites and will also actually do this.
