Chinese search engine Baidu launches online music service
Chinese search engine Baidu entered into an agreement with major record labels to launch an online music service. The company agreed the distribution of digital music with ‘One-Stop China’ (OSC). This is a joint venture whose shareholders are Universal Music, Warner Music and Sony Music. The agreement with OSC was accompanied by a conciliation agreement, endorsed by the Beijing High People's Court that ended outstanding litigation between the three record companies and Baidu.
OSC shareholders will license Baidu their new releases, which include Chinese songs and international tracks. These tracks can be streamed or downloaded. Baidu will pay music content owners on a per-play and per-download basis for all tracks delivered through the Baidu MP3 Search service and via ‘ting!’, Baidu's new social music platform. This platform offers users the ability to share music and music-related content. Users will be able to sign up for membership free of charge through the advertising-supported ting! website, ting.baidu.com.
