AFACT demands graduate response system in Australia
The Australian Federation Against Copyright Theft, also called AFACT, has written letters to major ISPs in Australia, saying they have until today to commit to talks on a graduate response system to tackle illegal downloading.
This is interesting, because AFACT is still engaged in legal proceedings against ISP iiNet. On behalf of several movie companies AFACT filed a lawsuit against the ISP, claiming that iiNet is responsible for copyright infringements of their subscribers through their network. The representatives of the entertainment companies involved believe that iiNet knowingly allows subscribers to engage in illegal downloading and file sharing.
Now, the ISPs have until today to accept AFACT’s invitation to meet for talks on cooperating with a graduated response-type of approach towards tackling illegal downloading. Should the ISPs ignore this deadline, AFACT is likely to take more (legal) action, as they already did against ISP iiNet.
The question remains whether the ISPs will respond to this request and will agree to meet, - like the U.S. ISPs have done recently - or that they will await the outcome of the proceedings against iiNet.
