Eminem is the first artist to ever sell one million digital copies with his latest album ‘Recovery’ in the United States. He also won a Grammy Award in 2010 with his album.

“Recovery selling one million digital albums is an incredible achievement by an incredible artist,” says Interscope Records’ Vice Chairman Steve Berman.

Also, the adds manager Paul Rosenberg says that Eminem has made a concerted effort to engage Eminem’s online fan base and that the fans responded in record numbers.

More and more we see artists actively responding to today’s digital society. We live in a time of (illegally) downloading and artists consequently often (therefore) miss income. Now we see that putting effort in fans online can be rewarding and albums can be sold successfully. The fans are willing to buy an album online, instead of downloading it for free. Another great example of an artist who cleverly responds to the internet and the social network hype is Lady Gaga, with over 10 million followers on Twitter (more than President Barack Obama).
