As the first United States intellectual property enforcement coordinator, Victoria  Espinel reports to President Obama and Congress on copyright, trademarks and other intellectual property issues. She has an array of federal agencies at her disposal to develop more effective law enforcement strategies.

Ms. Espinel spoke at the World Copyright Summit in Brussels on Wednesday, where she outlined the Obama administration’s policies on intellectual property. She discussed copyright and privacy issues in relation to new technologies like cloud computing, in which a user’s data is stored on remote servers and accessed over the Internet.

In an interview with The New York Times, Ms. Espinel elaborated on some of the topics from her speech and addressed questions about the progress of the global war on piracy. It becomes apparent that the Obama administration chooses a hard-lined approach and will not hesitate to take strict enforcement measures.
