Today, research and consultancy firm Considerati present their study ‘Facts to share: digital content distribution in the Netherlands’. The report provides an overview of the current state of legal and illegal distribution of copyrighted works online in the Netherlands.

Based on more than 200 scientific publications, the researchers provide a unique insight in the emergence of legal and illegal markets for digital entertainment content and new online business models. The authors also take into consideration the motivation of consumers to download from illegal sources, the damage this causes to the entertainment industry and the broader economic and societal impact. ‘Facts to share’ is a comprehensive overview and presents the facts in a very accessible and pleasant reading style. This report is without doubt an important contribution to the debate on downloading in The Netherlands to further shape.

"A major problem in the current download debate so far is that it lacks a clear overview of facts. The parties involved cite a wide variety of studies and never discuss them and their various aspects together", says Bart Schermer, partner at Considerati who led the study. "This study aims to provide politicians, policy makers and various stakeholders in the download debate with more insight into the complex economic, legal and ethical questions that arise from legal and illegal content distribution."

The study was conducted at the request of the Dutch branch organization for the entertainment industry (NVPI) and supervised by a supervisory committee consisting of representatives of Warner Home Entertainment, ICTRecht, Universal Music Netherlands, NUV, Buma/Stemra, NVPI, the University of Technology in Delft, platform producers and a retail expert. Arda Gerkens, a former member of parliament, was chairing the supervisory committee.
