Spotify introduces streaming of live concerts

Popular music streaming service Spotify is preparing a great inventive step: they will start with the streaming of live concerts. Several media report this weekend that the first gig they ‘broadcast’ is a live nightclub set in London, on April 5.

The event, which is sponsored by car manifacturer Nissan, marks the start of an interesting divergence from the company's core competency of instant-access music from a wide back catalogue.

The set includes some big-name acts, such as The Naked and Famous, Pony Pony Run Run, Delphi, and a DJ set by Elly Jackson of La Roux. The company has indicated that this event is not a one day wonder. Spotify plans to add this service to their product line permanently to offer their customers something they cannot find anywhere else. Additional live events are being scheduled. What isn't clear yet is whether users will have access to a recorded version of the event after the broadcast is over - although this will likely be subject to interesting licensing negotiations between the event's organisers and Spotify.

The addition of live event broadcasts to Spotify’s repertoire may well be the final touch needed to conquer the American market. Spotify is expected to launch their service in the US within a few weeks. In the meantime, the current one million followers are getting value for their money.
