Free films in exchange for consumer data and attention

Dutch production company Snoooep has come up with a nifty new business model: producing films around branded content. At the end of May their first feature film Claustrofobia will become available free-of-charge for PC, laptop, IPTV, smartphone and iPAD. The 90-minute thriller was partly financed by the Maag Lever Darm Stichting and the Sponsor Bingo Loterij.

Snoooep seems to have a thorough understanding of the way customers think about content nowadays: “Consumer preferences have changed: I want this and I want it now.  Today’s consumer grew up with freely available information and entertainment. Why pay when I can get it for free? They’re no longer willing to pay unless they get something extra in return.  Instead of buying a ticket they leave their name, e-mail, address and phone number. As a reward we will also give the viewer a special service or product offer from one of our partners.”
