Warner Bros. is making The Dark Knight accessible through Faceboook. The movie giant announced Monday that it will make movies available for renting and buying for a limited time through their Facebook fan pages. Facebook users can stream The Dark Knight from their Facebook account for three dollar. After paying, the movie is accessible for 48 hours.

For the time being, only American Facebookers can make use of this offer. If the pilot proves a success, the new service may become available in more countries.

"Facebook has become a daily destination for hundreds of millions of people. Making our films available through Facebook is a natural extension of our digital distribution efforts,” said Thomas Gewecke, president of Warner’s digital distribution department. “It gives consumers a simple, convenient way to access and enjoy our films through the world's largest social network."

Warner Bros. is actively exploring new digital channels this year. In February, the studio published two movies, Inception and again The Dark Knight, as apps for mobile phones and tablets.

Does this mean that the industry is finally waking up? Fantastic, even though it's long overdue. I'm not sure about the choice for Facebook though.

Hi Hans, I share your enthusiasm about the industry waking up. I think the core here is not the choice for Facebook, which may or may not work, but rather the observation that Warner is experimenting with different digital channels. We won't know if Facebook was the right choice until tried, right?
