Future Of Music Coalition to study artist revenue streams
The Future of Music Coalition (FMC) is launching the "Artist Revenue Streams Project", aiming to investigate how artists are actually making money today, and how that's been changing over time. As many artists struggle with declining CD sales, this seems like a very useful project. FMC is currently looking for candidates to interview.
At the moment it is not clear what FMC intends to do with the results of their study or if they will release their data publicly. They explain on their website that the objective of their project is to go beyond speculation and try to figure out how musicians in many genres are making a living in today’s increasingly digital marketplace.
The Artist Revenue Streams project will be a multi-method research initiative to assess if and how musicians’ revenue streams are changing in this new music landscape. According to FMC, there has not yet been a comprehensive effort to directly ask a wide range of musicians — from many different genres and locations, and representing an array of careers — how their revenue streams are changing across the board, if at all. FMC proposes a multi-stage research project to undertake this crucial work and hopes to conclude this by the end of the year.

@direwolff: thanks for your comment. you're right, the case studies on Techdirt's blog do give some good examples of how artists found themselves a viable business case. I have to add that these are all bands and acts that have allready reached quite an audience. The question is now, how a new act can organise business successfully, as selling merchandise only works if your name is set. Apparently the FMC believes there should be a comprehensive study on this subject. Perhaps FMCs conclusions will give us some new insight on how the famous and the not-so-famous artists can build a stronger music business overall.
