Free Record Shop complains about free records
We regularly write about problems that arise when artists complain about what others do with their work. Today, the reverse is going on: a complaint about what an artist does with her own work.
This week, Dutch Singer-songwriter Trijntje Oosterhuis decided to give her latest album away for free in an attempt to reach a new audience for her music. The singers announcement is fiercely criticized by Hans Breukhoven, owner of Free Record Shop, a Dutch chain of record stores, today in newspaper Algemeen Dagblad.
Free Record Shop fears loss of revenue as a result of the free distribution of CDs by the singer. Furthermore, people can also discover new music in a record store, according to Breukhoven.
Trijntje Oosterhuis gives 750 thousand copies of her new album ‘Sundays in New York’ away for free next week. The singer has not yet responded to the criticism. But, in any case, she already earned herself plenty of attention from the media with her action.
