One more list: the twenty largest senders of DMCA notices

By the end of the year the top something lists and funny compilations just seem to keep on coming. ChillingEffect.org happily joins the tradition and published a list of the twenty largest senders of DMCA notices, the American version of Europe's notice and take down request (NTD). Top of the list is the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI), with 1272 DMCA notices between January 1st and December 15th of 2010.

Surprisingly, second on the list is the Clube do Hardware, with 303 notices. For those who like me have no clue what this club is about; the Clube do Hardware is a Brazilian website about computers. Number three on the list is somewhat more obvious: American film production company Twentieth Century Fox with 299 DMCA requests. Perhaps contrary to some expectations the RIAA is ‘only’ in seventh place with 203 applications.

Other interesting names on the list are Folkert Knieper with 158 requests for removal of recipe pictures and Deckers Outdoor Corporation with 84 requests to remove images of … UGG's boots.

ChillingEffects maintains a database of the DMCA requests ISP's receive. This way, the site hopes to help internet users understand their rights and the legal situation on the internet. A number of parties, like Google, Yahoo and Twitter, send copies of received DMCA requests to ChillingEffects.
