Sharing is caring: NZ cartoonist welcomes torrent
New Zealand cartoonist Dylan Horrocks was pleasantly surprised when someone alerted him to a torrent of all 10 parts of his comic "Pickle" on torrent search engine Demonoid.me. Horrocks explains on his blog that this makes him very happy: "I am, or course, delighted, and wish to thank whoever uploaded it (not to mention whoever went to all the trouble of scanning it in the first place!). Just remember to seed, folks ... "
The debate on filesharing and piracy usually focusses on music, movies and television series, but also affects other sectors such as the comic scene. Horrocks is not convinced that piracy is harmful for (comic) makers. According to Horrock, the online sharing of their works gives young authors a chance to become known on their own account, independent of the influence of large publishers. " OK, to sum up: I think piracy is a fact of life and waging war on it causes collateral damage. I just don't believe it's a serious threat "said Horrock in a discussion on piracy via Twitter earlier this month.
Despite this, Horrocks explains that you can make him happy by buying one of his books: "This is, of course, a win-win scenario, and not only makes me happy, but also improves the lives of all the publishers, printers and retailers involved."
Previously a strip of Horrocks appeared on the front page of The Pirate Bay. Black Eye Books published the issues of the comic book Pickle between 1993 and 1997. Horrocks is also the author of the Hicksville and Batgirl comics.
