Murdoch and Jobs to present an all-tablet newspaper
Apple and the News Corporation are working on an iPad newspaper. Jobs and Murdoch are reported to schedule it’s official announcement this week and the title will to be launched before year’s end. The Daily is to appear on the iPad only. So, The Daily will lack a site on which the news is also reported.
The Daily’s editors are based in New York, with around 100 editors working on filling the digital pages. The tone of the app is to be that of a US-centric tabloid, while not shying away from reporting serious news and stories.
A subscription to The Daily will cost 0,99 dollar per week, a significantly reduced price when comparing it to their paper-based older siblings.
Murdoch has very high hopes for app-based newspapers. Contrasting to news distribution on the web, Murdoch feels people are willing to pay for content in the case of app-based distribution. Therefore, he has invested 30 million dollar in setting up the new paper (for which we should soon find another word, it seems).
If the move to tablets will be a success, only time will tell. If anything, it credits Mr Murdoch that he is willing to experiment with new payment models for news in the online environment. He recently erected a paywall to restrict access to some of his newspapers, amongst which the British titles The Times and The Sunday Times. It remains unclear whether this move was successful.
