Dutch youths, especially under the age of 18, buy relatively little music online and relatively often download unpaid music, compared to youth in 32 other countries. Thus are some one of the results of a study held under the youth community of social online game Habbo Hotel amongst over 47,000 respondents. A total of 2654 Dutch youngsters participated in the study, with 88 percent under the age of 18 years.

Only 4 percent of the Dutch participants indicated to buy music via the internet, resulting in a bottom position for the Netherlands in relation tot the other 32 countries. On the other hand, a remarkable 53 percent of Dutch youth respondents indicated to stream music, putting the Dutch youth at the forefront of the national index for streaming music.

According to the Habbo Hotel study only 7 percent of Dutch youngster regularly buy CDs.

The research also shows that 23 percent of Dutch young people ‘often’ recommend music to friends through social networks. 47 percent does this ‘sometimes’. Netherlands thus takes in a middle position amongst the other European countries. On the other hand, only 3 percent of Dutch respondents become informed about new music through social media. 72 percent use music lists and radio and television to get information about new music.
