Member of European Parliament poses critical questions on ACTA upon most recent round of negotiations

German Member of European Parliament Franziska Keller has posed two critical questions about ACTA to the European Commission. MEP Keller asks the Commission how the eventual treaty will be implemented in European and member state law.

Keller further wonders how the Commission will ensure that the democratic prerogatives of the Parliament will not be harmed because of the secrecy that surrounds the ACTA negotiations.

The questions follow a statement by the Commission that was issued after the conclusion of the most recent round of negotiations in Tokyo, Japan.

The Commission statement hardly contained any news other than that the negotiators have agreed on almost all areas and that soon, another text will be made available to the public.

In her questions, Keller is getting a little ahead of things. As the texts look now nothing needs to be implemented as all measures either fall within the scope of existing legislation or are voluntary. Furthermore, the negotiations are not yet concluded and no definitive text has been published.
