New firmware Playstation adds new functions, excludes non-Sony peripherals
Sony recently released a new version of the PS3 firmware. This new version enables 3d blu-rays to be played on the console. At the same time, Sony has used the firmware to shut out a lot of usb peripherals that are not produced by Sony itself. It mostly concerns the DualShock 3 controller.
Sony claims to have taken this step to reduce the risk of injuries and to improve safety. Some of the third party controllers would not meet with Sony’s quality standards, which might result in dangerous situations.
Tweakers suggests (in Dutch) that the usb ban could also be result of Sony’s fear that the Playstation would be hacked again. Hackers used third party peripherals to do so. Unfortunately for Sony, a hacker recently announced to be able to complete the hack with Sony’s own controller.
Sony argues that many of the third party controllers are produced and marketed without a licence and that it is high time for this practice to end. Future versions of the firmware will also block unlicensed peripherals.
Reactions form users reveal, however, that some licensed peripherals are also bounced by the strict access protocols of the new firmware. Sony has not yet commented on this matter.
