Autumn brings a new online streaming service for film and television to Europe. Microsoft yesterday announced that its Zune service will soon supply new European markets, including the Netherlands.

Movies and television shows from Zune’s catalogue can be hired and streamed to PC, Xbox and the new Windows 7 Phone device. Dutch users can only hire and stream rentals via Zune. Users from other European countries like the United Kingdom, Spain, France and Italy can also purchase content at Zune. They are also offered a special pass for EUR 10 a month that allows for unlimited access to the platform’s music. It is not clear why these facilities are not (yet) offered on the Dutch market.

Zune’s catalogue is well stocked with successful Hollywood films, but doesn’t seem to include very recent movie releases. One of the latest films from the 'new releases' section is the movie "Shutter Island", that premiered in Dutch cinemas in mid-February.

No worries for European arthouse fans though. They can be served online by Mubi, the platform that offers streams of so-called "quality films" for the European market (also for the PS3).
