Swiss Supreme Court: monitoring, collecting and selling file-sharers' IP addresses breaches right to privacy

The Swiss Supreme Court ordered a company to stop monitoring file-sharing networks and collecting  file-sharers' IP adresses last week. By doing so, Swiss anti-piracy company Logistep AG breaches the privacy of internet users.

Logistep collected the IP addresses of file-sharers to sell them to movie and music companies who want to enforce their intellectual property rights.

The Swiss Supreme Court however concluded that personal information, including an IP address, is protected by strict Swiss data protection laws. The Court found that Logistep's efforts to protect its clients' copyright couldn't justify the significant infringement of online piracy suspects' privacy.
