Research by Ipsos mediaCT shows that 64 percent of people prefer physical copies of console games over digital copies. This percentage is higher for games than for newspapers (63%), movies (51%) or music (45%), said Bramley, director of the pollsters.

"I believe the preference for physical discs amongst next gen gamers reflects the potential value they derive from the pre-owned market, which is holding up the preference for physical - this is unlike the music and film markets", he said.

Slightly more than half of respondents said that a lower price is a key factor is their interest in downloading games, while 27 percent thought earlier availability would persuade them into obtaining a digital copy.

Of all polled Xbox-360 console owners, 23 percent claimed to have downloaded a game in the past year. For PS3 owners, this percentage remained at 17 percent, and at 8 percent for Wii owners.
