Research says game industry revenues will rise significantly in the next five years
According to a global survey by PriceWaterhouseCoopers, the game industry’s revenues will grow significantly over the next five years, supposedly rising from 52.5 billion U.S. dollars in 2009 to 86.8 billion U.S. dollars in 2014, an average increase of 10.6 percent per year.
According to PWC the game industry is doing very well. Particularly online games and ‘wireless games' (consoles like Xbox, Wii and handhelds like Nintendo DS) will give a major contribution to this growth. The market for online games will amount to 30.6 billion U.S. dollars in 2014, and for wireless games to 13.1 billion U.S. dollars.??Increasing broadband penetration, growth in the number of smartphones with enhanced graphics capabilities, the growth of consumer-friendly application stores and the growth of 3G networks, would all contribute to these developments in the game industry.
Unfortunately, it is not clear whether or not PWC, in calculating these rising revenues, has taken into account the loss of income due to increasing piracy in the gaming industry.
