The partnership between Buma and Creative Commons has been extended by one year. Creative Commons (CC) is an addition to copyright and provides artists the opportunity to provide free access to their work and allows others to use and spread it under predetermined circumstances.

Buma/Stemra, that collects copyright remuneration with music users on behalf of music authors, together with CC Netherlands, offers a licence that allows music authors to permit free use of their work for promotional purposes. When a commercial user, like a bar or a record label picks up on it, payment is due.

“The pilot,” Buma states, “has proven a success and has so much potential that it just has te bo continued. The cooperation that runs for two years now, has been extended by a year. In the coming year, the target is to raise awareness of the new licences. “We will work getting more recognition in the marketplace for this special initiative”, says Matthijs Bobeldijk, project leader at Buma/Stemra.

The project is unique in the world. Sweden and Denmark have now developed similar licence. And according to Buma, other countries, all the way to Australia, will soon follow suit.
