British Secretary of State tough on file sharing
Only months after the Digital Britain report being published, theDepartment of Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS) and its Secretary of State Peter Mandelson have indicated to plan firmer action against online copyright infringement.
In the Digital Britain report, a trial is proposed with ISPs sending file sharers a warning letter. If, after a year, this would not result in a 70% decrease in illegal downloading, technical measures should be taken, such as throttling connections. There is now talk of shortening that year-long period.
A Digital Britain follow-up consultation on copyright violation has already been planned for September. New proposals seem already to be debated.
There were rumours that Mandelson took an interest in the problem of illegal file-sharing only after dining with music tycoon David Geffen. A BIS spokesperson denied this and names it “Only natural that Lord Mandelson will take more of an interest" now that Digital Britain is nearing the implementation phase.
