Kazaa resurrected as subscription service
Who doesn’t remember Kazaa? Part of the illustrious history of illegal downloading sites Kazaa became a household name for file-sharers just after the first wave of p2p networks. The story ended when courts ruled that the company needed to prevent users from infringing copyrights.
Now, the Kazaa brand has been attached to a new subscription service to offer unlimited downloads of songs from the major record labels. For a fee of around $20 per month, users have access to a database with over one million tracks on opening. The service is, for the moment, only active in the United States.
This is now the third instance of a company aiming to capitalise on the powerful brands of illicit downloading sites. First was Napster and last week, announced their take over (and turn around) of The Pirate Bay.
