Recently, the proposed Hadopi law, aimed at increasing effectiveness of anti-piracy measures, was partly revoked by the French Constitutional Council, France’s highest court. The French government reviewed the law and proposed a replacement of the previously censored punishing arm of the law.

The Ministry of Culture and Communication strives for a rapid promulgation so that swift action can be taken against illegal file-sharing. The new law “Hadopi 2.0” will complement the Hadopi law so that Hadopi will regain a mandate to punish wrongdoers. The French Senate will discuss the draft law at July 8th.

Hadopi, the newly established agency that enforces legal distribution of online content, is, under the proposed law, authorised to track down infringements, notify assumed infringers and permit the French judicial system to act quickly by using simplified legal procedures. One of the potential punishments is temporarily disconnecting file-sharers from the internet.
