Mininova: 1 million euros in revenue
The Dutch Bittorrent site Mininova has earned 1 million euros in 2007. Technology website Ars Technica got the figures on Mininova through the Dutch Chamber of Commerce. In 2006 Mininova had a turnover of 600,000 euros. Mininova has confirmed that the figures are accurate.
Mininova’s main source of income is advertisment. With 25 million pageviews per day, Mininova.org is an interesting platform for advertisers. According to Mininova part of the revenue is from other websites such as snotr.com, their toolbar, and external partnerships
Mininova is still involved in a civil lawsuit with Dutch anti-piracy outfit BREIN. According to BREIN Mininova should filter the links being uploaded to their site pro-actively, because Mininova benefits from the copyrighted works being uploaded. Mininova defends itself by saying that it removes illegal or copyrighted material within 48 hours of a notice.
The revenue figures of Mininova seem to suggest that the estimate of the public prosecutor in the Pirate Bay case is not that far fetched. In this case, in which the final verdict is expected April 17th, the public prosecutor came to a figure of 800,000 euros. The Pirate Bay administrators claimed that they didn’t make any money at all.
