European Cultural heritage library slashdots

The new European database for cultural heritage, Europeana.eu, was closed down soon after its opening yesterday. The Europeana server crashed as a result of the massive interest in the new database, at one point 10 million users an hour tried to connect to the site. 

A placeholder on the Europeana site states that the database will return in a more robust version half December. Until then people can watch an introduction of Europeana via the developer version of the site.
